History of Heilman Music

Heilman Music Publishing was originally founded in 1971 under the name “Glouchester Press”. The company was created to facilitate the marketing of a series of collegiate music theory books, authored by Dr. Richard Hensel and John Heilman Schooley, for use at Eastern Kentucky University and Fairmont State University in West Virginia.

The original publication, “A Prospectus for College Theory (First Year-Semester One)”, offers an integrated course of study involving Analysis, Composition, Ear Training, Keyboard Fluency and Sight Singing.

In 1976, Schooley published his first original musical composition, “Serenata for Tuba & Piano” and shortly after its publication, the name of the company was changed to Heilman Music in order to establish an original brand name registration with ASCAP as a music publisher.
